PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME AUTUMN 2007
Autumn – the season of fire and mud! – my favourite! Here’s the first go at the programme - it’s still to be confirmed for a number of the evenings so as usual, the programme is quite speculative (flexible sounds better) at present and this is my best shot so far… (subject to being completely different later on… – as last term, we will keep you updated!) We continue to grow from strength to strength, and a phone round is getting impractical so I am going to experiment with a web only service except for those that cannot readily access me from home – let me know if you can’t see the blog and I’ll put you on my luddite list… Meanwhile, I’ll pop this on soon (promise) - its http://boreattonscouts.blogspot.com
Welcome to Ian Gunton as an officially volunteered ASL, but those parents that join in on an ad hoc basis – do keep coming – we can’t manage without you!
14/09/07 Welcome back and welcome to new scouts. We have one last chance to see our way around the assault course – I’ve invited the army (Lt Warburton) along to help us do it professionally
21/09/07 6-9 at Home Farm, Leaton – last year we started our eco-project to restore and protect a valuable habitat, but we havn’t finished the job yet – we need to get rid of the trees and save the planet. Eco-warrior skills with axes and saws for a bit more slash and burn farm management. (liable to be wet and muddy – very). Meet at the same car park as last year, down the road from the foot of the walled garden.
28/09/07 It’s coming around to the going up ceremonials and I thought we would build a bridge for the job again, but we have lots of left over bamboo from the Japan Camp so we will do a lightweight bridge – Tonights a planning and design night with Ian, whilst Older Scouts go on the SSGMG w/e with me.
28/09/07-30/09/07 SSGMG caving w/e – see separate sheet – this is for older scouts (over 12) and explorers and should be fun and wet in Wales
05/10/07 Going up riots of passage – Bridges and Bangers in the dark – this might be muddy so the smart uniform ceremonials will take place in a more civilised event next week
13/10/07 SATURDAY – Joint event with cubs to do the official handing over and swearing in of new scouts – Smart uniforms at the Crocky Trail (?!?) – perhaps bring a change? Details tba
19/10/07 Autumn Camp – no scouts troop night as we will be departing for a most civilised camp staying at the National Trust owned Elizabethan Mansion in the South Shropshire Hills – see separate sheet. It’s OK – we’ll only be civilised in the evenings (if at all) and quad trekking (why not just hike? Oh well – everyone said they wanted to go on the quads….) and team building etc. at The Edge.
26/10/07 HALF TERM (and recovering from camp) – no troop night
02/11/07 This part of term is a long way away so will likely swap about a bit from here on, but we plan to have a swimming practice for the scout swimming gala. We didn’t actually win last time but we had two teams and if you added our points we sort of had a moral victory…. We’ll try for a 1-2 this time!!!
09/11/07 6pm – 8pm Bonfire night at Leaton Hall with cubs, BBQ, fireworks – parents and siblings welcome!
11/11/06 SUNDAY Remembrance Day Parade – its important that we all attend in smart uniform – its one of only two occasions where we have a formal parade and I expect everyone to attend these. Its also planned to be the first parade for our Drum Corps, so particularly important for us all to be there.
16/11/07 Ian is planning some Air Rifle shooting
23/11/07 Caving again? I plan to ask Idris if he’ll take us to some more caves as it gets us out even when its dark (‘cos its never going to be sunny down there is it?)
30/11/07 7-9pm – Our DC has obviously been embezzelling our capitation for decades ‘cos he’s running a Cubs vs Scouts ‘who wants to be a millionairre’ night (Me! Me!)
07/12/07 Fencing competition – Ian and I both want to practice our coaching skills on a captive audience if we passed our exams last week! If we fail...? oh well – it would be good to shorten the waiting list by one or two!
14/12/07 I’d quite like to do a proper winter night hike, or maybe just a winter hike – I have an authorisation to lead hikes in the Shropshire Hills and the Berwyns, so we may do that this night, or practise survival cooking for a day’s hiking over the w/e - tba
21/12/07 End of term – we’ll do the ice disco or waterworld as usual ‘cos its fun.
We’ve a couple of other ideas to discuss with PLs and if you have any questions/suggestions (or if parents just want to join in) then contact me on 01939 291352 or on the mobile during troop meetings 07976 633524 or Ian on 01939 260153 / 07958 267599
Alan Herbert and Ian Gunton
Part 2
There is also a First Lego League National Robotics Competition – I wanted to do it but I’m too old (sob!) so I’ll have to coach you! It involved designing a Lego Mindstorms Robot to complete a tough challenge and doing an Energy Conservation research project. We have until the end of November to prepare and then we take part in regional finals and then National and World Finals – I think I get a free holiday in Japan – it’ll be great!
