Hedge Affect!

We have been doing eco work at Leaton Home Farm for a few years now, and they are developing the traditional hedgerow wildlife corridors that allow a rich variety of wildlife a habitat and more importantly, create corridors for wildlife to move around the county.

Last year we were removing guards from larger blackthorn to encourage low growth on a new hedge: this year we will help tidy back a more established hedgerow to remove blackthorn shoots that are encroaching on the set-aside borders adjacent to the hedge. These shoots need to be dug/pulled out so we dont end up encouraging them to regrow (like coppices!).

We will meet at the top entrance to Leaton Home Farm (see map) on 1 Oct at 6pm and aim to finish by 8pm (you will have noticed that it is dark then, but we will stop hedgemaintaining when it get dark and burn the shoots and other bonfire stuff and cook marshmallows (to regain our energy!) - and just enjoy the fire!

Come with:

  • Outdoor clothes appropriate to the day
  • A spade
  • Gloves
  • Goggles or glasses if you have them - Blackthorn are spikey!
...or at least as much as you have of the above...
