In a bid to stimulate the avian housing market we decided to join in the National Nest Box Week! (OK we're a bit early, but that gives time to spruce up our boxes and hang them up spruces (or where ever!))
Various levels of entirely predictable chaos followed as we handed over a hardware stores worth of hand and power tools to the scouts, with planks of wood and sketchy instructions... Impressively, by the end we had a sizable collection of recognisable nest boxes! Admittedly, some of the boxes were obviously targetted at the eccentric end of the nesting market... but hey they're all bird brained so I'm sure theres a sparrow or a Finch out there that will appreciate it ;)
Here's one of the good ones - unfortunately during the chaos I forgot to take pictures, and only just remembered in time to get a quick phone pic as my phone gave up its last 2 seconds of charge...(no power to take another pose or to focus!)
Here's some instructions similar to those we used (it changes a bit depending on how thick your plank/scout is) http://www.gowildinthegarden.co.uk/projects/construction/birdboxmk1.asp
