National Scout Car Racing

Some of you may have heard about this as we talked about itat the planning meeting...but here’s the official announcement!

This is a pedal car race based on the rules of the British PedalCar Championship. The challenge is to build and race a human powered vehiclearound a circuit in York on Saturday 7^th July.

How about thinking about the problems with this design?

Obviously the first task is to build the car so I’m lookingfor four scouts who think they’d like to learn the skills required for vehicledesign and manufacture. We’ll start off with a bit of maths to work out all theimportant stuff, centre of gravity, wheelbase, gear ratios, Ackerman steeringetc. then start hacking apart some old bikes, wheelchairs and school desks toend up with a work of art.

At the beginning of June we’ll set about choosing fourdrivers for our team, who may or may not be mechanics. (Driving practice couldhelp you with your fitness challenge too, so get out on your bikes).

To be eligible for the team you’ll need to have been under14 on 1^st January 2012 andfree to be in West Felton on a Tuesday night 19-00 till 21-00 from the 13^thMarch. It’s the same night as robots so first chance goes to those notpreparing for Manheim.

The race week end is likely to be a camp but it’s not fixedup yet...

If you want to be a race mechanic contact me ASAP andconvince me why. I can only manage four at once due to the tools we’ll be using.

For the National Scout Car race teams are mixed boys andgirls. If we decide to enter the British Championship there is a separate classfor female drivers.

The Great Tedsmore Railway

NOTE This meeting is on the Thursday night you are not doing SCUBA diving.

You have not seen a model railway until you've been to Tedsmore. Probably the largest O gauge railway in the country. I guess it's about six scout huts! It's set up to represent the whole of the UK with numerous stations and requires a minimum of eight people to operate.
Not only will you be impressed by it's size, the scenery and detail are fantastic too.
It operate to a strict timetable with hundreds of trains operating each evening. Each operator is responsible for preparing and releasing the trains in the correct order, setting points and signals. It's a very difficult task and has all the problems of a real railway.

You'll need to bring the activity form with you. All details are on it.

The railway is in this brick building on the left side of the farmyard gate. (It used to have banners advertising Tedsmore Venison, not sure if they are still there though)?

I know its ages off, but don't forget to get the BSAC medical form signed off.

This can often just be signed by a parent, but if you have asthma, for instance, you need to be checked by an approved BSAC diving doctor who will say whether you are fit for a try dive. The pool environment is very safe, but you will be breathing cold, very dry air and and first time is always a bit stressful. I can let you know who the BSAC doctors are if you can't sign the declaration and want to get them to give you the all clear. I should warn you that we have found one of them difficult to contact and the other reluctant to sign anyone off, but if you tell them that it is a one night, scouting, pool session run by Wrexham BSAC as a one off experience, they may be less concerned. I understand that it is fine for someone with mild asthma of a type that is not induced by this sort of activity.

I will post a sign up list to divide you into two groups and post activity forms with locations tiimes contacts etc etc soon, but get the BSAC form sorted out asap!

Don't forget to come with all the kit!!! We'll get crampons and axes supplied but you need to be fully kitted up for winter hills!!! If you are not sure or you know you're missing bits of kit - just give me or Richard a call and we'll sort you out!

IIIIcccyyyyyy! it was very slippy at Llandegla! We all got round safely, but not without a few spectacular slips and slides! Mountain Biking on sheet ice is great so long as you don't ever slow down or turn! For the most part it was great - we took diversions to avoid the really silly bits and the escape routes were pretty exciting on ice! and then the most dangerous bit was in the car part as we failed to cycle up to the cafe - I watched four of the scouts and a leader follow each other to the same pace and fall off at the same place (durrr.... that pile of bodies and bikes is a hint guys!)

Hot choc at the end still the best! Pete got some pics of serious hot choc slurping, and here is the view from the bike cam. Super green pedals worked and didn't break me! (Woop! Go super-green pedals!)

Mountain Biking Is GO!

OK We are definitely going today. The forecast shows there may be some sleet at lunchtime but it's warming up in the afternoon so that means rain and MUD. That's what mountain biking is all about!
Please make sure you have got a waterproof top and trousers to prevent wind chill, a woolly hat to put on when we stop and gloves you can bike in. Bring a small rucksack to put the gear in when you get hot. Also bring a bottle of water to drink. Oh and some money to buy a lovely hot chocolate at the end! See you later

Just before Christmas, the Drum Corps received a request from organisers of this local panto, for a few scouts to showcase their talents, after the display they did at the Royal British Legion's BBQ in the summer. Three scouts kindly volunteered (you know who you are!), and gave up their time for several rehearsals and 3 outstanding performances. I watched the Sunday matinee, and they were fab! They played along to 'We Will Rock You' by Queen, and did a star turn of 'Chopsticks' on stage in front of the curtains, while the final scene change was being arranged.
So, big thanks to all 3 of you - the audiences were certainly well impressed by the drumming - many of them will never have seen or heard Boreatton Scouts in action! I heard loads of positive comments about you - Well Done!

Mountain Biking

Next Saturday is our afternoon at the National Mountain Bike Centre. So that means it's a year since Alan broke his ankle :-(

We're not planning to have any more accidents but you'd better fill the activity form in just in case!
If you mum or dad wants to come with us, that's fine as it's an open public track, but we're not waiting for them, (please wait for me though, won't you). Alternatively there's a great cafe and plenty of tracks for walking the dog etc. If you need a lift or bike transport let us know in good time and we'll try and sort something out.
You will not be allowed to ride if you're bike isn't well maintained i.e. everything must be bolted on tightly, the brakes must work, the tyres must be blown up etc. You'll also need a cycle helmet. NO EXCUSES.

On Friday 3rd we'll have another go at bicycle jousting as we got trounced by the French at Summer Camp. If you can bring your bike we'll make sure it's safe for Saturday too.

Bangers & Rabbit (& Bridges)

We've got a few potential new scouts who've yet to cross the bridge into Scout-dom or will it be a leap of faith?
If you've finished your model bridges, don't forget you need to bridge them to get the badge (if they pass Phil's rigid inspection criteria that is).
We are then going to build one to cross over the river.
Just in case anyone falls in, we'll have the BBQ going to get dry and we'll be cooking last weeks rabbits and a few sausages. Get them out of the freezer please Emma!
We'll be outside obviously, so make sure you have outdoor gear, a head torch and a change of clothing.
Normal start time but I suspect we'll be a bit late finishing...

Winter Term Programme

This is our best shot at the programme for the term. Some things, like the sub-aqua still need to be confirmed so, as always it's likely to change a bit.

Don't forget there's loads of other stuff going on. The County swimming gala is on 24th March, SSGMG if you're over 12, meet every month, (see the separate programme).
The science club is part way through the robot project but listen up for new things happening later in the year.
If you fancy joining the marching drum corps, they meet on a Thursday in Baschurch.

For those that can, we have been invited to present our research to an academic in the food science department of the School of Chemical Engineering at University of Birmingham. You will be picked up with your robotics shirt and scout shirt from school at 3:30 on Friday 20 January by Philippa in the Landy and then brought back to Leaton Hall for about 7:30-8pm .
I've put the consent for this and the trip to the National Finals on the one consent form below, so even if you can't come to Birmingham, still fill out the form and bring it, along with the photo consent form you were given, to our next meeting. You were all given info about the programme for the Finals day - note you do not need pack lunch - it will be provided (pack breakfast might be good though!)

Field Craft

Matt Anwyl has kindly offered to acquire a few dead pheasants, rabbits or pigeons, whatever happens to pass his way. Then teach us how to prepare them, ready to eat.

Where do you want to go?

Everybody who read the SSGMG programme knew we were going to the Breidden Hill last Sunday not the Berwyns. Most of us had a good time but an un-named leader nearly didn't get there, feel free to ask him for the full story, hee hee..... (we're all allowed to make one mistake).
The weather was great, we saw a pheasant fly into an electricity wire, just like "Chicken Shoot", it wasn't hurt... well it managed to fly off anyway. We found something looking like a Scout in a pile of leaves, I thought it was Russell, but you may know him by another name?

We also managed a couple of geocaches en route. (They are not really praying) I'm sure Al's got some better pictures since he carried his big camera but you'll have to wait.

Ha-ha its the same joke as last time we went but still makes me larf....
The first winter walk of 2012 is this Sunday 8 Jan on the Berwyns.
Probably won't be as cold as last time...

but then that walk started out in warm sunshine (really! check out http://boreattonscouts.blogspot.com/2008/12/walking-in-winter-blizzard.html !!)

It's an early start, but early finish - good chance to walk off some pud, check out new gear, get blown off a hill. Hope to see a good bunch of you on the hills as it's always fun when we get a big turnout from Boreatton. Do make sure you have good waterproofs/windproofs jacket and trousers, hat and gloves- ring me if you need kit 'cos we can supply decent gear which is the difference between a great time and hypothermia at this time of year!

Rob Chapman a professional magician and hypnotist with mystical leanings will come down and give us a show of magic and mystery, and then hopefully will explain a bit of the mystery and teach us something to confuse our families with over the holiday.

Don't forget Friday is swimming in Wem. Please aim to arrive at the pool at 7-45pm, try and share lifts if you can as it's a long way. BRING THE FORM I posted last week. If your drivers don't know where the pool is please check before leaving because I think it's hard to find!

I may have a couple of spare seats on the way back, if you need one see me at the pool.

Next Monday is the parents meeting at 7pm in the hut. Hopefully we've got loads to talk about and will have some cool videos too. Maybe even a biscuit or two but I can't promise!

Can you out-swim a lion? They are not very good so you should be fine.

This year we need another strong team for the county swimming gala in March. We've lost three of our stars to explorers so we are looking for new talent.

We are having our practice session at Wem Pool at 7:45pm on Friday 2nd Dec. We'll run through the races, there's only three and a plunge, then we'll try and persuade the lion to get dressed so we can get the inflatables out. (he'll puncture them otherwise).

We'll swim and muck about 8-9pm and be ready to collect by 9:15pm ish.

You'll need to complete the activity form below, bring it on Friday or bring it with you.

Fencing night

I don't know what Phil was on about with 'renaissance colanders' on the prog (maybe he is planing to cook up some veggie soup to keep us warm?), but this week's troop night is our fencing night.
We will be doing a field survey of fencing around PGLtown, and then training in high speed fence crossing for competitive traversing of the more common 'high panel' and 'post and rail' fences - so bring head torch and clothes prepared to get muddy.

It's Tryfan! ...for our next mountain group hike on Sunday 20 Nov. It's a great scrambly mountain and hopefully the weather will be calmer than it was for Snowdon... For those that came on the Snowdon hike, and like scambling, this will be a great day out. It's only for those over 12 and, at this time of year, this one is not really the best introductory outing with the mountain group - I'll try and ring round just those that have been out with the SSGMG before.

Please also bring a fresh consent form with contact details for the day. Don't forget to ask to borrow kit if you don't have the right gear for mountains at this time of year!!! It's free, but you have to ask!!! And make sure you fuel up with a good breakfast and bring hot drink/soup! Some of you were cold on Snowdon and drank all my soup!!!

Remembrance Sunday

This Sunday, all members of Boreatton Scout Group are expect to parade with the Royal British Legion to remember those killed or injured fighting to defend our freedom.
The Drum Corps will lead the parade and Ed will play the Last Post for the first time.
Hopefully our former lead drummer, recently injured in Afghanistan will be fit enough to join in, albeit on wheels.
This is the only time we ask you to put aside all other commitments and honour the promise you made to God, the Queen and Country when you joined the Scout Movement.
We will meet at the Admiral Duncan Pub in Baschurch at 10-10 on Sunday morning.
Please make sure you are smart, in full uniform, if you have it, neckerchiefs ironed, woggles, blue or black school trousers, clean school shoes, a poppy in your left pocket and some money for the church collection. It's probably best to put a tee shirt underneath as we won't march in coats. you will be cold!
We are also looking for three people for the colour party to carry the flag. As well as being smart you'll be required to attend a practice at the church on Saturday at 12-00.

Going underground (really this time!)

Idris is running a scout caving badge course for those that came on the SSGMG Caving w/e in Littledale - he felt bad that you didn't get to do any caving! It will be on the w/e of 13-15 January in S Wales plus a session in the hut and he has estimated the cost as £45 (but we do transport cheaper so should be less than this if we plan it right!) He has given first option to Boreatton (because we made up most of the Littledale camp) and we aim to do Porth Yr Ogof, Bridge Cave, and Ogof Fynnan Dhu (OFD) top sequence - this is my favourate cave - its great! Bangers and cubs

It's the season for fire and explosives - and sausages! What better way to celebrate the triumph of parliamentary democracy and the overthrow of despots and traitorous fanatics! Let's burn them in effigy!

We do this jointly with cubs at my place so we will meet at Leaton Hall at the back by the shooting barn (where we do archery and rifles) at 6:15 to 7:45 on Friday 4 November. Let me know if you need directions!

We will have (lots of!) sparklers so if any parents are concerned about these please let me know and we can arrange suitable duties and entertainment that avoids them (we allow cubs and scouts to use sparklers in a roped area with controlled numbers and a water bucket for disposal of used ones - extra parental supervisors welcome!)

Siblings and parents are welcome to stay for the evening and the cubs will provide soup/bangers/burgers (thanks cubs!)

The team all shot really well at the National Rifle Champs - up against the best!
Jack won a cup (OK... mug) on the bonus target shooting at the Advanced Field Target, Ben shot really well on the Main event Field Target, and finished just outside the medals, and New Matt won Boreatton's first NSARC medal, getting silver in the smallbore - this is not shot in age groups, but against everyone! Hurrah!!!! Woop-Woop!!!!! Well done Matt!

(I did well in the Fullbore, but was shivering in the first slot of the morning for main event rifle which didn't help my aim! Ho hum - warmer sleeping bag next year methinks...) And everyone had a great time, shooting well, having fun, singing very badly (!)

As an aside, we've finally got the full results from the National Archery Champs - well done Evie getting 16th and 19th in U18 Target and Field archery (shame about the clout!), I was 5th in clout (if we could put my clout with Evie's target and field archery we'd have been pretty good overall!) and Thomas was13th in U14 Clout out of 150 plus scouts. Again well shot everyone!

It's Surprise Night

OK so the programme says Science Book night but as Al and Phil are away with the Rifle Team (Good Luck). We are doing Pete's Surprise night.

So to let you into the secret, this is the plan....

FULL UNIFORM as we'll have an important visitor. Terry Darlow from the county training team will come and do some basic First Aid with those who did the sponsored cycle ride. That should complete the Cyclist Badge.

He'll also do some First Aid training with the Explorers who are going to Nottingham for a competition.

Then after many requests we'll be making a couple of different types on woggle, The Turks Head one, like my blue and yellow one or a plaited leather one.

Don't forget Friday is the last day for:

Horse Riding forms and money (£10).
Patrol Leaders and APL's Camp forms and money (£12)

Those that get across can help themselves to some lovely wood smoked hot dogs!

We'll meet at 8-00 prompt at the hut. We're usually tight for time so don't be late. Bring some warm clothes and waterproofs if the rain is coming. Don't forget a TORCH. Preferably a head torch or one you can hold in your mouth. Do you fancy going over that bridge one handed? No I thought not.

I'm not expecting anyone to fall in but we've had wet feet before so a change of clothes in the car would be useful or at least a big poly bag to sit on.

If you are a PL or APL you can go on a special district camping weekend on the 19th and 20th November. It's at St Martins and looks to have an good programme planned. It will be a great chance to meet other senior scouts in the district and make some new friends. The last one was three years ago and we still keep in touch with some of them.

We had a good gang from Boreatton at the Caving camp - why not get back together for the next SSGMG event and get to the top of Wales (that's Snowdon) next Sunday? These walks are great fun, especially if we get a good group of you coming regularly! Here's a video one of the scouts make a couple of years ago about one of our Snowdon hikes (and also around Tryfan and the Glyders which is the November hike!)

Roger can't make it this week (or the last week of every month) so it's cancelled this week. By next week we will have a new drum and a sample strap to have a go with. High Ceilings

It rained - a lot - really lots! So the caves were too full of rain to fit any scout in them... but it was a Gill Scrambling Camp - just like caves with high ceilings :)

Here's some pics of the w/e: some are green 'cos the underwater phone case is green to balance underwater colour saturation, some are boggy 'cos it it was, some are just chilling about the hut 'cos that was dry so we did...

There's a mix of scouts and explorers here so I'll post it to both blogs! BOGOF!

We had our first meeting of this year's team on Tuesday 7:00 to 8:30 - there's 12 of us so we can get lots done! We've made a good start at the model making and have some ideas for the new Bert5e - in particular we have a first platform to test already, so next week we will get started thinking about our project and start testing programs and thinking about how to get points in the Robot Game. So - some homework (what! Homework from scouts!!!! - yup - but its OK - you don't need to write essays - just do some advance prep for brainstorming so we can get some ideas for the project that we can turn into experiments and have fun (c: )

So long as the sick people at PGL have dismantled the barricades and re-opened we can do some Kayaking on Friday! You WILL get wet, you WILL get a bit cold and you WILL have the chance to splash the Leaders (if you are quick enough).

So, a change of clothing, a towel and a plastic bag to carry it all in would be a good idea. No uniform apart from neckers as you will be straight into the Kayaks.

Early start due to the nights drawing in - 5.45 at the hut. If you are late I can't guarantee you will be able to find us.

Subs are due now please, and don't forget to leave your mobile at home (they don't float!!!). Also don,t forget the consent form - no form, no Kayaking.

Home at Last!

We had a great cycle ride on Saturday and raised money for a number of local churches and the Historic Churches Trust.

We visited ten churches, loads of geocaches, cycled through the ford at Maesbury, got pecked by rheas in Dovaston and spent a huge amount of time on the new BMX track in Kinnerley. Overall we did 26 miles and had just 12 punctures!!! No wonder we were late back.

Well done to all the cyclists and special thanks to Jerry for back-up support.

Wow, the Summer has flow by but we can now look forward to an Autumn term of Fireworks, Camps, Kayaking, Caving, Mountaineering, Robotics, Petes' Infamous Surprise Night (oh no!) and constructing a life size Saturn 5 rocket. OK I lied about the last one but it looks to be an exciting term, starting with Back To Basics (whatever that is).

Science book judging

The hols are over! It's time to get everything going again!
Well, I guess some people are still grabbing a last minute break, but I'd like to get the science book judges together again - not least because you'll be running one of the troop nights soon and we need to plan what to do! I trust you've all read your books and are ready to tell us about them, and we'll see what we can DO to check out just how much fun we can get out of them!
My current favourate from the Icky Sticky Blood and Snot Book is the chocolate flavoured snot chemistry experiments it led to! Yum! (I think...)

It's time for the SSGMG caving weekend and I thought we could take it over to start off our prog with a weekend away, with our new explorers too, and with white water, caves and hills. It's a new area of the country so I haven't been down the caves here, but hey - it looks wet! If it is the usual programme, we'll do a cave and some gill scrambling on day one and then there will be overground/underground options for day two. It is only for over 12s and it does mean missing the first troop night, but should be fun!

Be prepared for summer camp - IACF 2011

Here's the plan and consent and info forms! It's nearly summer!

I've been checking through the prog and see that we have the games day straight after our canoe expedition - it would be good to make sure that the shoes (covering toes) that you use for getting soaked canoeing are not the same as you will have for games (running around so covering toes and not full hiking boots!) - hmmmm.... we'll have a bus full of smelly trainers :(

A busy end of term! just getting my breath back! Here's a few pics from the last week or so...

The Drum Corps were busy with parades at Baschurch and West Felton village fetes

...and also a special parade for the Royal British Legion BBQ to recieve their affiliation badges...

Our Royal Society book prize judges had their first meeting to see what the best new science books can inspire us to do! They will run a troop night next term to let the rest of us see how good the books are! (there is a fine tradition of the work of learned societies being done down the pub, and the chips and coke went very well with the science...)

We ran a climbing day at Llanymynech and did the SAS style abseil practice, and then as it was a bit damp, we had a quick scrammble through Llanymynech cave (nice cave and got suitably muddy!)

Did lots of planning at the end of term BBQ (but failed to hand out a lot of badges... will have to do that next term!) We did manage to award Evie and Lorna their Gold awards...

If you want to go for it, you need to let us know and we can plan it out with you - you will need to come to most of the meetings and follow up some of the activities yourself (not many of you finished the pioneering badge for example by presenting your finished knot board to Phil...), but all of you can complete this if you want to commit to it!)

...and finally we got our explorers together! (but let Philippa take the picture - we're not really that fuzzy it's just she keeps forgetting how to press the button...(!?))

...and finally (really finally) Mini-matt and Evie were sent off on Jamboree! (they're in Sweden now! very quiet around the house...)

End of term

Hurrah! It might even be nice weather on Friday (as English summer goes...) so we will have a BBQ at my place, Leaton Hall 7pm-9pm and eat charred sausies or burgers and icecream and chocolate etc. We do need to get together to plan a few things...

Here's the gang being speedy! Competitive? us?? surely not... but you just aren't trying hard enough if you end the day without spinning off! (Not that that excuses the parent that span in front of me as I was about to overtake and pushed me into a major getting-to-know-you with the tyre wall)

Climbing details!

This week's troop night is Sunday afternoon 17 July - climbing at Llanymynech quarry lead by the SSGMG guys. We meet at Llanymynech Quarry car park at the end of Underhill Road in Pant (see map) at 1:30 and should be done by 5:30.

The weather forecast is not good and if it is too wet or there is a risk of lightning we won't be able to climb... I will try and get hold of Idris and borrow the cave gear so we have a wet weather alternative, but haven't done this yet. If we can only do the caving the day will be shorter too. As it is a bit open ended, and the West Felton show will be occupying our drum corps for the first half of the day, we will discuss return travel arrangements with you when you are dropped off and I know numbers and cars and we have a firm idea of what the weather is. Check the blog before you set off in case the weather is really bad and we have to make alternative plans!

Drum Corps Weekend

Saturday 16-45 is the British Legion BBQ at Windyridge, tucked down the back of the main road through Baschurch. See the pictures for the attached location.

Sunday is the WF Carnival. Meet at The Court Nursing Home, SY11 4LE at 12-45. We should be finished on stage at about 3pm. Scouts who are planning to go climbing will need to arrange transport to LLanymynech.

It's another Sunday troop meeting this week - sorry... it was the only day I could get SSGMG guys to come out and climb with us! We will meet at Llanymynech quarry and climb and abseil etc. There is the chance to do scary cliff hangy dangly things if you are foolish and have no fear, or do relatively easier scramblier climbs like we do on SSGMG hikes if you prefer - something for everyone!

You need to bring a consent form and meet at the quarry at.... (Dum Dum Du du du du duuum... (eastenders yeah?))

Karting Koordination for 10 July

ITS NEARLY TOO LATE!!! GET THE PARTICIPATION FORM TO ME NOW!!!

Everyone should have the Rednall Karting participation form and if you are coming you need to have given it to me by 9 July as I will confirm final numbers to Rednall on Saturday. Numbers are constrained so if parents want to join in let me know but the priority will be scouts, explorers, then parents. There are only 15 scouts going as it stands so there may be room for parents - get me your participation form and I will let parents know if they are not able to race. I am away until Friday evening so there will be no reminders! I am taking the participation form to be your consent to take part and confirming that YOU accept all risk associated with the motor sport they are taking part in. I will have received that by 9 July - the day before Karting - as they have had problems with scout or cub groups recently and we need to show them we can be super prepared and no trouble at all at Boreatton.

One year when we went, there was a crash and two (a scout and a cub) were thrown from their karts: no-one was seriously hurt, but it shows that motor sports are not without risk. Last year, after the cub's event, one of the parents was sporting a cut above the eye where he got hit by part of the barriers... This all sounds very scary, as does Rednall's participation form, but I am happy that the activity is run properly the other leaders and I are happy that it is safe to let our own kids take part. They have a great time!
Parents, the scout one day activity form serves to give me your contact details for the day and give me info on any medical issues that may be relevant. Please complete one of these too (forms, forms, forms...). Also we are charging £10 for this so please bring along on the day if you have not paid in advance. The one day activity form is additional to the participation form which I need before 9 July!!!

District Cub Camp Opening Ceremony

The Drum Corps will open the District Cub Camp this Friday 8th July. Please arrive at the Oswestry Show Ground, Park Hall at 7-45pm......

Don't forget there's no scouts as we are karting on Sunday.

The Drum Corps are also opening the Baschurch Fete on Saturday 9th July. Meet at the Primary School at 1-30. (Other scouts are welcome to come and watch etc.).
